Episode 23 – 8 keys to Get Out Of your Comfort Zone

8 Keys to “Getting Out of your Comfort Zone”

In today’s episode we are going to discuss getting out of your comfort zone. Because, Your Success Depends on It

The scariest and at the same time, the most rewarding thing I ever did has to do with the very first time I decided to step out of my confort zone and just go all in with a new direction in my life.  It was 1989. Up to that point my professional life had be centered around marketing. Starting my junior year in high school working in retail sales, to my first corporate job with AT&T business marketing, to part time side gigs in telemarketing and even my first business in insurnace and financial servcies, everything I did involved some form of marketin.

It was 1989, with my wife and new born daughter in tow, I took a leap of faith. I decided to step out of my confort zone, to enroll in college, but I didn’t pursue I degree in marketing. I instead jumped into a science based program. Up to that point science was never a part of my eduction beyound the minimum amount from high school and i mean it was very minimum. If you look back at my highschool transcripts, while I was a decent b student, science was always my worse subjects. I mean I even got a D in chemistry and I was choosing to burn the bridges behind me and to do something where chemistry was to be a major part of my university studies.  My highscholl curiculum had been marketin and mathmatics. And I was good at both. But here I was leaving the field that I knew so well, walked away from my job, and committed to a chemistry based, 6 year curiculum, to become a pharmacist.

And you know what. It was the best decision I ever made. The most rewarding thing I have ever done. And it was the most difficult thing I had ever done in my life. Because I made such a drastic leap in faith about myself, I now know that I can do anything that I set my mind to do.

And ever since I have made the decision on multiple occassions to step out of my confort zone, to learn new skills, to gain new experiences. Personal growth and development has been a major part of my life since then.

I would argue that the most pivotal step in maximizing personal growth, is leaving your oh-so-loved and deeply adored comfort zone.

As soon as someone finds the strength to recognize the path that they need to take to exit their comfort zone and act upon that realization, their potential grows exponentially. To lead a life that does not challenge expectations or beliefs is to lead a life devoid of greatness. If that statement offends you, then I suggest that you reflect on what factors in your life you perceive as mechanisms of self-protection, but that are also holding you back from confronting an obstacle, challenge or goal, holding you back from growth.

Taking time to reflect on how we limit ourselves whether it be socially, physically or in our careers can allow us to develop plans to push ourselves into the difficult, but most rewarding actions that will elevate us. By taking small steps outside of your comfort zone to reach certain goals each day, you will find yourself less overwhelmed by the task at hand and excited about what other seemingly impossible goals and dreams you can achieve.

I truly believe that if a person has the will and desire to make something happen that should happen, they will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal and cannot be stopped. Human beings are powerful and capable of healing, learning and thus, can grow in the optimal direction throughout their entire lives if they are self-aware and willing to put the work into their dreams.

The less time that we spend complaining or just thinking about what we should be doing and the more time we spend being the person that we desire to become, the more success we will find. While it most certainly is not always easy to be the best version of yourself, to put in the extra hours in the gym or the library, the output is tremendous.

For the person struggling to find the motivation to work harder, go longer and pursue a big idea — I ask you to look at yourself as your most precious investment. You are your most valuable asset and it is your duty to maximize your skills. Ultimately, we cannot rely on anyone other than ourselves, and we are all accountable to our ourselves and that voice in our head that asks us to do more and be better even when it isn’t easy.

A healthy amount of discomfort is required for growth. You cannot remain in the same place, repeating the same patterns of behavior and expect to evolve. There is always a way to be better. I would also advise you to appreciate all of your efforts at the end of each day and give yourself time to decompress. Balance is key, but disguising laziness or fear of the work as necessary down-time is self sabotage.

Get out of your comfort zone, your success depends on it!

Fear is a natural and essential part of growth. Every time we consciously choose to step outside of our comfort zone, the next uncomfortable thing becomes a little bit easier. Make the brave decision that the time has come for you to take your first bold step toward the biggest future you have imagined, however far off the beaten and comfortable path that may take you.

Here are a few ideas to help you get out of your comfort zone…

1. Move toward your fears.

Things I’m afraid to do are often the things that have the greatest potential to expand my life. Now when I feel fear, it’s usually an indicator that I need to do that thing I’m afraid of. If you’re not ready to take a big leap, take a baby step. You’ve got to start somewhere.  Making a commitment to lean into that each day has been really uncomfortable at times, but it has also been responsible for a lot of great memories and a deep level of personal satisfaction. It could also contain opportunities for personal and professional growth.

2. Take it one step at a time.

You might think that sounds less than ambitious, but moving out of your comfort zone doesn’t happen all at once. Take time to evaluate where you are and plan where you want to go next. Then take your next step in your new direction. That’s how you develop momentum and keep yourself moving on to greater opportunities, and further out of your comfort zone.

3. Allow yourself to be vulnerable.

You can play it safe and always do the predictable thing, or you can push the envelope a bit and go for maximal growth. Moving out of your comfort zone is bound to make you feel a little exposed and that’s a crucial part of the process.

You’re going to feel afraid. But moving forward—even while knowing that failure is a possibility—helps you set new and higher bars for your goals and move into your zone of courage at the same time.

4. Find a role model who overcame big hurdles to do what you want to do

Getting out of your comfort zone is easier if you know of someone who has paved the way.

5. Create a major concrete goal requiring many incremental ones

The most important benefit of setting goals isn’t achieving your goal; it’s what you do and the person you become in order to achieve your goal that’s the real benefit.

Goal setting is powerful because it provides focus. It shapes our dreams. It gives us the ability to hone in on the exact actions we need to perform to achieve everything we desire in life. Goals are great because they cause us to stretch and grow in ways that we never have before. In order to reach our goals, we must become better.

Life is designed in such a way that we look long-term and live short-term. We dream for the future and live in the present. Unfortunately, the present can produce many difficult obstacles. But setting goals provides long-term vision in our lives. We all need powerful, long-range goals to help us get past those short-term obstacles. Fortunately, the more powerful our goals are, the more we’ll be able to act on and guarantee that they will actually come to pass.

6. Get over your intimidation and hang with people more successful than you.

Ditto for playing with tougher golfers, bowlers or tennis players. If we only golf with high scorers and bowl with low-scoring friends, we’re destined to remain mediocre,

7. Make friends with people outside your industry.

Hanging out with someone whose work is completely different from yours offers a great opportunity to learn about new things, get a different perspective and increase your circle of influence.

8. Become a mentor.

An executive can mentor a mid-level businessperson, but a college freshman also can mentor a seasoned professional. Everyone has something to offer—and to learn. Mentoring gives you confidence, makes you feel good and puts you in contact with other people who can become your mentors.

Remember to always keep your mind open to change. Dale Carnegie advises. “Welcome it. Court it. It is only by examining and re-examining your opinions and ideas that you can progress.”

Let me just end with this.

With mergers and acquisitions, downsizing, new technologies, and the switch to a workforce of part time employment it is getting more and more difficult for folks to get ahead.

I believe strongly in the Dave Ramsey principle of achieving financial peace and I’m distraught over the number of folks struggling to make ends meet. I am making it my mission to help folks achieve financial peace.

You’ve probably dreamt of having your own business before. I know I always did. The idea of business ownership is for you to have financial freedom. To be debt free and to go beyond that, to be able to live a comfortable lifestyle without worrying about your income. To have time freedom. To be able to take time off when you want. If you don’t feel like going in you don’t go in. To have that vacation home or to be able to travel.

Or Maybe you just want mom to be able to stay home with the kids.

You know we all have those dreams but yet most people in America aren’t business owners today.

Why not?

Well for most of us it’s because we don’t have the money to invest in a business. Many of us are struggling just to make ends meet.

On top of that most of us don’t have an idea for a product or service to offer.

We also just don’t want to take the risk or maybe we just can’t afford to quit our job to start that business because we need the money every month to live on that our jobs provide for us.

I get it folks.

But what if you really could start a business today that literally could give you all the upside potential of business ownership.

A business that could give you that freedom that that financial peace of mind.

The time freedom of being your own boss. Working your own hours.

But you didn’t have to risk anything to get started.

If that were possible wouldn’t it be cool?

A business that you can get started right now.

Part time.

So you don’t have to quit your job. Keep making that income and work this business in your spare time creating that side gig income. That’s number one.

Number two, there’s no investment required to get started so you can start on your journey to debt freedom quicker.

Next, you don’t have to buy products to sell and convince people your products are better than others. Like I said before, no lotions or potions or pills, no magical juice, no instant weight loss products.

You can be positioned in the center of some of the fastest growing services where you’re saving consumers and business owners money on services they’re already using?

Or maybe you’re introducing new services to them that brings new value or better quality to their life?

That’s what we’re doing now.

Whether we are trying to get out of debt, build up an emergency fund, save for our kid’s college education, or save for our own retirement, one of the quickest ways to get there is through generating extra capital by creating some side gig income.

Start without investing a bunch of money, start part time with the upside potential of real business ownership.

I want to help you. We have the track record and experience and the financial backing.

I’ve got a presentation to show you for more information. We’re looking for people who want to take leadership roles and help us lead and develop the expansion of this new division.

Come see our presentation at http://AIMHighForSuccess.com and see if it’s for you.
